Job Description

A well-established California litigation firm is seeking an associate attorney to join its growing public entity and civil litigation practice. The position offers the opportunity to handle sophisticated, high-exposure matters involving government entities, law enforcement agencies, and complex civil disputes.

This role is ideal for an attorney seeking substantive litigation experience, significant responsibility, direct client contact, and meaningful courtroom exposure within a collaborative team environment.

Unlike a traditional volume-driven insurance defense practice, attorneys work on a select number of sophisticated matters involving substantial motion practice, strategic analysis, client counseling, and hands-on litigation responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Manage litigation matters with partner guidance and increasing autonomy
  • Draft and argue motions, including dispositive motions
  • Handle written discovery and discovery-related motions
  • Take and defend depositions
  • Prepare cases for mediation, arbitration, and trial
  • Appear in state and federal court proceedings
  • Communicate directly with clients, experts, and opposing counsel
  • Assist with trial strategy and trial preparation

Qualifications

Required

  • Active California Bar license
  • Civil litigation experience
  • Strong legal research and writing abilities
  • Experience handling motions and discovery
  • Excellent analytical, advocacy, and communication skills

Preferred

  • Public entity defense experience
  • Federal court experience
  • Civil rights or Section 1983 litigation experience
  • Employment litigation experience
  • Deposition experience
  • Trial, arbitration, or evidentiary hearing experience
